Mr Spin has each-way Highway Hcp claims

Wednesday 2 November 2016, 4:28pm

Mr Spin might not be a world-beater, but trainer Peter Roach believes he has as good a chance as any to win the Highway Handicap at Canterbury.

The octogenarian trainer, who has been working with thoroughbreds for more than six decades, said Mr Spin had performed solidly in his two races this preparation.

"He is a long way from being a brilliant horse or anything like that but he keeps running a good race," Roach told AAP.

"He has done everything right."

Mr Spin finished third in his last race at Coffs Harbour on October 14, his first outing since breaking his maiden at Gosford on September 30.

While Roach plans to stay in Coffs Harbour on Saturday, the gelding will travel 540km from his stable to run in the Highway over 1550m at Canterbury.

"I wouldn't be going down and putting my last on him or anything but it is a winnable type of race," Roach said.

"Bar one or two of them I don't think there is anything great in it.

"I give him a good each-way chance."

Roach, who has eight horses in work, says Mr Spin's racing pattern relies on luck in running.

"He gets back a bit and that worries me," Roach said.

Roach took Mr Spin under his wing after the horse's owners Mick and Robyn O'Neill asked him to lend a hand and train him.

He said the lightly raced five-year-old had had a few hiccups along the way but would run again in Sydney if Saturday's race went to plan.

"If not it will be back to the drawing board," he said.
