Payne's family link to Melb Cup triumph

Tuesday 1 November 2016, 5:26pm

Despite not having a ride in this year's Melbourne Cup, Michelle Payne still has cause for celebration after brother-in-law Kerrin McEvoy won the race on Almandin.

Payne made history when she became the first female jockey to win the race on 100-1 shot Prince Of Penzance last year.

Twelve months later McEvoy, who is married to Payne's sister Cathy, won his second Melbourne Cup 16 years after winning the race on Brew.

"It's so exciting," Payne told the Seven Network.

"My sister Cathy is due at home to have their fourth baby.

"Hopefully she's held on because it's ready to come any time soon."

Payne said McEvoy was an amazing rider after Almandin edged out Hong Kong-based star Joao Moreira on Heartbreak City.

"What a finish," Payne said.

"Kerrin is such an amazing rider. What a great ride it was."
