Jennifer 2nd winner for Weir on Cup day

Tuesday 1 November 2016, 2:42pm

Darren Weir won't have a runner in the VRC Oaks but the trainer has his eyes on the Sydney autumn with Jennifer Lynn who has stepped up to the plate in Listed race at Flemington.

The filly produced a strong finish in Tuesday's Lexus Hybrid (1400m) to claim her first stakes win and bring up a double for last year's Melbourne Cup-winning trainer following the victory of Speedeor.

Weir abandoned plans for this week's VRC Oaks with Saturday's Wakeful Stakes winner Tiamo Grace and ran out of time to get Jennifer Lynn ready for the 2500m of the Classic.

"She is a filly who has had a few problems behind and has needed a lot of work," Weir said.

"But she has stayer written all over her pedigree and I think we will get her ready for the Oaks in Sydney in the autumn while Tiamo Grace will go to Adelaide.

"She had to dig deep today and that shows me she can get over ground."

Ridden by Blake Shinn, Jennifer Lynn ($12) circled the field on the home turn and ran down the centre of the track to claim Prompt Response ($11) by a short half head.

Invincibella ($7) also came from back in the field to finish another neck third while the favourite Sweet Sherry ($4.60) was in a winning position but was swamped late and finished 12th of the 16 runners.

"Kristy who works for me at the Warrnambool stable deserves the credit for the work she has done with Jennifer Lynn," Weir said.

"This filly worked with Tiamo Grace last week and worked better than her but her barrier (14) was a problem."

Shinn had no problem with the barrier with four of the first six winners on Melbourne Cup day coming from wide draws.
