Darren Weir wins support race on Cup day

Tuesday 1 November 2016, 2:08pm

Darren Weir still can't believe he's a Melbourne Cup winning trainer.

Prince Of Penzance gave Weir a surprise victory in the Cup 12 months ago but he doesn't have a runner this year.

The Weir-trained Speedeor took out one of the support races on Tuesday's Cup program, the Schweppes Stakes.

Heading to Flemington Weir was thinking how lucky he was to have won Australia's richest race last year.

"I'm not hiding the fact it was a fluke," Weir said.

"Everything went according to plan. We had a fit, well horse on the day.

"There was a lot of horses that had a lot of bad luck and we had the good luck."

While Weir won't be featuring in the Cup he was delighted to be winning a race at the meeting.

Ridden by Luke Nolen, Speedeor ($7.50) scored by 1-1/4 lengths from Biased Witness ($5) with Hellbound ($26) a short-half-head away third.

"Races are hard to win on this day," Weir said.

"There's 20 runners in a race and you need that much luck."

Weir said Speedeor, a $50,000 Magic Millions purchase, would now head to Ballarat for the Magic Millions Three & Four-Year-Old Classic on November 19 and if successful to the Magic Millions meeting on the Gold Coast in January.
