Top Queensland mares to miss spring

Sunday 16 October 2016, 4:02pm

Queensland's two best race mares Sold For Song and Miss Cover Girl will not take part in the Melbourne spring carnival.

Sold For Song is in the spelling paddock after failing in the Golden Pendant at Rosehill on September 24.

Trainer Kevin Kemp immediately called a halt to her southern campaign and sent her to a farm for a rest.

"She raced well in her first start in Sydney when sixth in the Shearco Stakes. But I was mystified by her run in the Pendant until we saw mucus in her nose after the race," he said.

"Sold For Song is in a paddock full of barley with two broodmares. She is doing very well."

Kemp said Sold For Song was not paid up for the mares' race at the Magic Millions in January but he still hoped she could make the field.

"There is a wild card system and we will be trying to win one of those races to get into the Millions," Kemp said.

He said if Sold For Song failed to get into the Millions she would be set for the Sydney autumn and Brisbane winter carnivals.

Fellow trainer Kelly Schweida hopes Miss Cover Girl, the winner of the Group One Tatt's Tiara in the winter, can respond to another short spell.

Miss Cover Girl was brought back into work with the Sydney and Melbourne springs in mind.

"She was being set for the Tristarc Stakes which was run at Caulfield on Saturday. But she didn't please me when he trialled behind Buffering and then she was only ordinary when she trialled at Deagon," Schweida said.

"It isn't much use going south if you are not right. She will have three weeks off and then I will get her back for the Millions day."

"There are several million dollar races there to suit her."
