Tony Gollan to appeal hefty fine

Thursday 15 September 2016, 4:32pm

Premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan will appeal a conviction and fine for a positive swab returned by Amexed after an Ipswich win in July.

Stewards opened an inquiry after a post-race sample from Stayers Final winner Amexed showed traces of the anti inflammatory substance Prednisolone.

Gollan was charged with presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance in its system.

He pleaded not guilty and argued he had no idea how the substance got in the horse.

However, stewards found him guilty and fined Gollan $8000.

Amexed was also disqualified as the winner of the $100,000 race on July 18.

Gollan said he would be appealing the decision to the new internal review system of the Queensland Racing integrity section.

"Of course I am going to appeal and take this as far as I have to. It is ridiculous and there is nothing wrong with the horse," Gollan said.

"Amexed has never had Prednisolone. The swab from his Caloundra Cup win two weeks later was all clear so it is a mystery to me."system of the Queensland Racing integrity section.

If he fails at the internal review, Gollan has the option of taking a further appeal to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal appeals branch.

Amexed is among the outsiders at $23 in Friday's Newcastle Cup with the market headed by the Kris Lees-trained Singing at $3.40.
