Le Romain to avoid Winx

Thursday 15 September 2016, 7:03am

Group One winner Le Romain is almost certain to sidestep Winx and run in the Cameron Handicap on his home track at Newcastle.

Trainer Kris Lees said only rain would prompt him to scratch the Randwick Guineas winner from Friday's Cameron (1350m) and run him against Winx in the Group One George Main Stakes at Randwick the following day.

To be ridden by Christian Reith, Le Romain has top weight of 59kg in the Cameron.

"At this stage, Le Romain is running in the Cameron," Lees said on his website. "He would be running only for second at Randwick (behind Winx).

"But it is definitely not going to be an easy task here.

"I've got great respect for Kim Waugh's His Majesty and also John O'Shea's Chetwood.

If Le Romain should win the Cameron, that would present the trainer with another problem going to the Epsom Handicap.

"If he won the Cameron, there's every likelihood he would get top weight for the Epsom at Randwick on October 1," he said.

Le Romain and Chetwood are the TAB's $3 equal favourites for the Group Three Cameron.
