Beach training works wonders for Bon Aurum

Saturday 10 September 2016, 3:26pm

A change in training environment has brought about the required form improvement with Bon Aurum scoring an impressive win at Flemington.

The lightly-raced son of Bon Hoffa sat wide in the Listed The Sofitel (1400m) on Saturday before sprinting clear of his rivals.

Ridden by Craig Williams, Bon Aurum ($5) scored a two length win over Ulmann ($4.60) with Hi World ($11) 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher said Bon Aurum was now trained at the beach at Warrnambool.

Maher explained Bon Aurum required surgery after suffering a knee chip injury at the conclusion of last spring and didn't perform up to expectations during the autumn.

Bon Aurum returned from a spell with a first-up third at Caulfield last month and Maher wasn't concerned stepping him up in both class and distance on Saturday.

And now Maher is considering another step up in grade for the four-year-old to the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on September 24.

"He was a bit out of form last prep so this prep we sent him down to Warrnambool and the staff has done a great job with him down there," Maher said.

"He put the writing on the wall last start and you could see in his coat today that he'd really come on.

"We'll keep raising the bar. He's made the necessary step today and if he shows us at home that he's still on the up we might look at the Sir Rupert Clarke with him."
