First Seal and English win barrier trials

Monday 5 September 2016, 8:30am

Group One winner First Seal has won a trial impressively, showing no signs of an injury which hampered her autumn campaign.

First Seal cruised to a three-length win over Sir John Hawkwood in her 1200m-heat on Monday in preparation for her return in the Group Two Golden Pendant at Rosehill on September 24

Trainer John Thompson said First Seal suffered a splint bone injury in the Canterbury Stakes which was not discovered until after she finished down the track in the Doncaster Mile.

"She got galloped on her hind leg on the outside and it shattered her splint bone so it had to be removed," Thompson said.

"We've taken our time bringing her back and she seems 100 per cent again."

It was First Seal's second trial since the injury. She finished fourth behind Group One winners English and Japonisme on August 19.

After the Golden Pendant, Thompson plans to run First Seal in the Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield before she tackles the Group One Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 29.

All Aged Stakes winner English also won a heat on Monday overhauling stakes-winning sprinter Takedown by three-quarters of a length in a 1045m-trial.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained English is expected to resume in The Shorts at Randwick on September 17 and race in the Premiere Stakes on October 1 before she heads south for the Melbourne spring carnival.
