San Telmo on Lismore Cup path

Sunday 4 September 2016, 4:53pm

Promising stayer San Telmo is set to take the first step to bigger and better things with the Lismore Cup his next aim.

San Telmo took his record to two wins and two minor placings in four starts for trainer Brad Smith when he won at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

It was San Telmo's second metropolitan win in Queensland since he joined Smith at Deagon earlier this year after doing his early racing with Anthony Cummings in Sydney.

"San Telmo came to us in good condition and he has flourished since. He had good staying form in Sydney and we are confident he will be more than competitive at the distance races," Smith said.

"He went from 1600 to 2200 metres and he handled it well. But he will be fitter for that run and we would like to test him in better company."

Smith said the Lismore Cup over 2100m on September 22 looked the ideal race for the gelding, who he bought at a tried horse sale in Sydney in February.

"We are also trying to sort out if he is eligible for the Magic Millions Stayers Cup in January. But if he is that would also be the type of race which would suit him," Smith said.

The lightly raced San Telmo lifted his prize money to $140,000 on Saturday which means he will have no trouble making the Lismore Cup field.

His trainer also has winter carnival aspirations for San Telmo next year and he will need to pick up more prize money in the coming months.

Smith who is building up a strong team at Deagon has also won two races with promising stayer Answered in recent times.
