Passion burns in Randwick win for Cummings

Saturday 3 September 2016, 3:22pm

A horse close to his trainer's heart, Burning Passion continues to repay James Cummings and his new owners.

The five-year-old was formerly raced by Goree and when he was put up for sale, Cummings recommended him to the Darby Racing Syndicate.

He has brought in several cheques and recorded his second win for Darby at Randwick in Saturday's Benchmark 92 race over 1400m.

"He is a stable favourite," Cummings said.

"This win over 1400 metres opens things right up for him and we'll have a think where we go now.

"The owners didn't pay too much for him and they have been patient since they bought him.

"He is a lovely horse and was very convincing over the distance today."

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and starting favourite, Burning Passion ($2.45) took the lead early in the race and hugged the rail to hold off Group performers Torgersen and Tsaritsa.

The Chris Waller-trained Torgersen ($12) finished 1-1/4 lengths behind the winner with his stablemate Tsaritsa ($4.40) another 1-1/2 lengths third.

McEvoy said Burning Passion showed how adept he was in the wet ground.

"He was very good first-up over 1200 metres," he said.

"James has been patient and spaced his runs and today up to seven furlongs (1400m) suited him and the ground suited him as well.

"I had the inside draw so I was able to just maintain that spot and to control it down the side and made sure that I just had enough carrots to come home."
