Long-range plan pays fror Ninth Legion

A long-range plan for Ninth Legion paid off when he gave jockey Damian Browne the feature race double with a win in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich.

Browne, who rode a treble at last year's Ipswich Cup meeting, joked he was already booked in for the 2017 event after earlier winning the Ipswich Cup on Maurus.

Ninth Legion ($8) gave rookie trainer Peter Robl his second stakes win when he beat Beckham ($8) by a length with two lengths to Steel Zip ($7.50) in third.

It was Ninth Legion's first win in 510 days but he did win the 2013 Villiers Stakes in Sydney.

Robl, a former top jockey, only got his trainer's licence in December and can take a lot of credit for Ninth Legion's win.

"They say winning is a habit, but sometimes with these old horses losing is habit. I was a bit worried he was getting that way," Robl said.

"But we decided to set him for the Eye Liner Stakes and gave him two lead-up runs on unsuitable tracks. We came here looking for a dry track and I was a bit worried when it went down to a soft five.

"However, we had blinkers back on him and a top jockey in Damian (Browne) which proved a winning formula. It is a nice when a long term plan comes off."

Robl, who had has first stakes winner with Eloping in the Silk Stocking last month, will now set Ninth Legion for the Glasshouse Mountains Sprint at Caloundra in two weeks.

He will again chase Browne, who is regarded as the king of Caloundra riders.

Browne has now won the Eye Liner Stakes three times with Ninth Legion joining Adnocan (2011) and Smokin Joey (2015) as his winners.

"I don't get to Ipswich often but I have been having luck here. I better book in for next year already," he said.

Tegan Harrison said Beckham had an easy lead and fought on well but the winner was too strong.

Trainer Pat Duff was happy with the comeback effort of Steel Zip.

"He has raced well today but they walked in front which probably didn't suit him," Duff said.
