Plenty at stake for Harrison

Thursday 16 June 2016, 10:58am

Tegan Harrison has an extra reason to hope her association with trainer Gai Waterhouse will produce a stakes winner at Ipswich.

Waterhouse has used Harrison on some of her Queensland runners since the jockey finished second on Skylimit in the Toowoomba Guineas last year.

She will ride Echo Gal in the race named after the Sydney trainer, the Listed Gai Waterhouse Stakes (1350m) on Saturday.

Harrison leads the Ipswich jockeys' premiership with 29 winners but has Jim Orman and six-time title winner Jim Byrne in hot pursuit with seven weeks left in the season.

The meeting counts towards both the metropolitan and Ipswich jockeys titles and Harrison sees it as a good chance to establish a winning buffer.

"I have never won a senior jockeys' title and it would be great to do it. But the two Jims will be hard to hold out," Harrison said.

"Also, Gai has been very good to me, so I would love to win any race for her let alone one named in her honour."

It has been a great season for Harrison who has ridden 86 winners overall and is fifth in the metropolitan premiership on 45 winners.

Harrison, who is rapidly approaching 500 career wins, is also having her best season for stakes wins with four black type victories.
