Cadogan set to step up to stakes racing

Wednesday 18 May 2016, 3:19pm

Unbeaten colt Winning Rupert has done his job for now with his Bjorn Baker-trained stablemate Cadogan ready to step into breach.

The two-year-old won at Randwick on Wednesday to cement his place in the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes in Brisbane.

Winning Rupert has been sent for a spell after his win in last Saturday's Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben at his second start.

"Winning Rupert and this fellow are the two clear leaders of my two-year-olds," Baker said.

"It's nice to see him (Cadogan) put his hand up. Winning Rupert is off for a spell and this one will go up to Queensland for the Sires' Produce on Saturday week."

"The way he handled the 1400 metres today shows he should be suited in the Sires'."

For the first part of the race Cadogan ($5) raced midfield inside the favourite Flow ($1.75).

Blake Shinn then took Cadogan behind Flow and brought him to the outside at the 600m, keeping the favourite in a pocket.

With James McDonald riding hard, Flow chased but Cadogan still had 1-3/4 lengths to spare on the line.

"He maintained his sprint from the 400 metres to the line so it was a good effort," Shinn said.

Baker's Brisbane team includes Imposing Lass who runs in Saturday's Doomben Roses and Coolring who contests the the BRC Sprint.

Both won stakes races at the Gold Coast last Saturday week.
