Big Tree has big assignment at Doomben

Friday 4 March 2016, 12:13pm

The future of talented three-year-old Big Tree will be decided by his return race at Doomben.

His trainer and part-owner Peter Balzen says there is an offer on the table from Hong Kong and his performance on Saturday will determine the colt's future.

If he doesn't win he will go to Hong Kong but if he does, his future lies in Australia with next month's Group Two Arrowfield Stud Stakes at Randwick a target along with the Gold Coast Guineas a few weeks later.

Big Tree's task in Saturday's McGahan Electrical 3YO (1110m) has not been made easy by the outside barrier in a field of 13.

Big Tree had four starts in the spring for four seconds, losing by a combined margin of just 1-1/2 lengths.

"He got close to some very good horses. I'm not saying he should have won all four races but one or two would have been nice," Balzen said.

"But his only win was in the Group Three Ken Russell Stakes as a two-year-old so he is a class act. I just hope he gets rewarded this campaign.

"He is a big striding horse so hopefully he can get across and get some cover."

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Secret Trail is the $3 favourite with Big Tree and Oberland sharing the second line of TAB's betting at $6.
