Qld stewards continue whip crackdown

Thursday 11 February 2016, 8:05am

Queensland stewards have continued their crackdown on breaches of the new whip rule by suspending repeat offender Beau Appo for seven days.

The rule means jockeys can only use their whips on five occasions in a forehand or backhand manner before the final 100 metres.

Appo, a senior apprentice, will start his suspension on Saturday night after he was found to have used his whip seven times before the 100m on Collateral, the winner of a race at Ipswich on Wednesday.

He was fined $500 for the same offence at Doomben last Saturday.

Since the new rule was introduced on December 1, stewards have fined Queensland riders more than $30,000 and suspended five riders.
