Newgate Farm’s promising young sire Foxwedge posted his second winner on today when the Nick Olive trained colt Fox Tales opened his account with a debut victory on his home track of Canberra.
Well fancied following a barrier trial win at Albury last week, Fox Tales showed speed from the gate to travel just behind the leaders.
When given clear running in the straight by Brendan Ward, he powered to the line to score a determined three-quarter length win in the open juvenile handicap.
"He’s a really nice horse, although he still doesn’t know what he’s doing,” said Nick Olive.
"He’s one of those horses that just improves and improves every time you ask him to do something and he’s done that again today.”
Olive revealed he had bought Fox Tales out of the paddock from his co-breeder Louis Mihalkya of Laurel Oak Bloodstock, having liked the colt on sight.
"He’s a tough horse and he’s going to be a real racehorse!” he added.
Fox Tales is the first foal of Angel of Avalon, a winning Tale of the Cat (USA) daughter of US stakes-winner Sunriseontheoasis.
Angel of Avalon also has a yearling colt by Foxwedge and was one of 116 mares covered last spring by another of the young Newgate Farm stallions in The Factor (USA).
Fox Tales is the second winner for Foxwedge joining Warwick Farm winner Kentucky Miss and he also has stakes-placed Aghna and place-getters La Renarde and Vulpini.
Foxwedge has 11 entries for the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale next month.
