Trials signal autumn carnival is near

Monday 18 January 2016, 1:51pm

Cox Plate winner Winx will be the centre of attention at the Rosehill barrier trials but many other autumn carnival aspirants will also be on show.

The Chris Waller-trained Winx runs in a 900m-heat on Tuesday which also features Group One winners Amicus and Complacent.

While Waller has yet to announce the starting point for Winx, trainer Gerald Ryan has earmarked the Group Two Expressway Stakes on January 20 for the return of Solicit who runs in the same heat.

A last-start winner of the Group Three Summoned Stakes at Sandown on November 14, Solicit's program will be geared towards the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1500m) in March.

"She only had three starts in the spring and only had a short time off so she is pretty forward," Ryan said.

"She will kick off in the Expressway then go to the Millie Fox, the Guy Walter and the Coolmore."

Ryan is also looking forward to the return of three-year-old Perignon who runs in the second of two trials for Group and Listed performers.

As a two-year-old, Perignon finished a close second to Speak Fondly in the Magic Night Stakes and once again the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly was her nemesis in the spring.

Perignon was second to Speak Fondly in the Group Two Furious Stakes and finished third in a three-way photo finish to the Group One Flight Stakes in the spring.

Speak Fondly beat Honesta by a short half head with the same margin to Perignon.

"If not for Speak Fondly, Perignon would have two Group Two wins and she finished a great third in the Flight," Ryan said.

"In the spring she always seemed to be half a run behind but I'm really pleased with her this time around.

"She seems bigger and stronger and will go through the fillies races starting with the Light Fingers Stakes on the 13th of February."

Perignon's trial also features stablemate Fireworks and Godolphin's Pearls, fourth in the Flight Stakes.
