Love Spy takes out Sunshine Coast feature

Saturday 16 January 2016, 5:14pm

Toowoomba filly Love Spy is set to return for a winter carnival campaign after an easy win in the Sunshine Coast 2YO Classic on Saturday.

Trainer Ben Currie had always intended to spell Love Spy after Saturday's race but he had been undecided which later path to set for the filly.

However, Love Spy ($6.50) was so impressive in her 1-1/2 length win over River Racer ($21), Currie was immediately thinking of winter black-type races.

"She is a lovely big strong filly who is very professional. She got off the float after a three-hour trip from Toowoomba without a sweat," Currie said.

"I think she is up to winter class in the Listed and Group three races but perhaps something even a bit better," he said.

Love Spy won her only other start by 5-1/2 lengths, but there was a fall in the race that disrupted the field.

"They wanted to tip a few others today but all I knew was my filly was ready to run a big race," Currie said.

By first-season sire Love Conquers All, Love Spy was sold at the Magic Millions Sales but was not paid up for last week's 2YO Classic.

"She won her first start at Toowoomba on New Year's Eve and I didn't want to over tax her by running her at the Gold Coast only nine days later," Currie said.

Winning jockey Jim Byrne said Love Spy had reached the lead easily and then had always been in control of the race.

Trainer Les Ross was left to rue his 25th second of the season when River Racer had little luck before finishing strongly.

"It confirmed she has plenty of ability and with a better barrier who knows what could have happened," he said.

The favourite Royal Tithe ($3.80) came from well back in the field to finish third and jockey Ryan Wiggins predicted a big future for her.

Improved mare Assertory is likely to back up next Saturday in the Listed Nudgee Quality at Doomben after winning her third race in a row.

Assertory, who did her original racing in the NSW northern rivers region, has won four of her eight starts since joining the Desleigh Forster stables at Eagle Farm.
