McEvoy trains Flemington juvenile quinella

Saturday 16 January 2016, 1:44pm

Tony McEvoy had the quinella in the $250,000 Inglis Premier in Melbourne last year and the trainer has the sales-restricted juvenile race in his sights again.

McEvoy prepared a one-two finish in Saturday's Better Beyond Plate at Flemington with Lessyd ($9.50) arriving in time on the outside to edge out Hey Doc ($4.80) by a short head.

Moshway ($26) rallied on the inside to finish a nose away third.

McEvoy trained Stoker to beat Manhattan Blues in the 2015 Inglis Premier and he said Lessyd and Hey Doc would head to the February 6 race at Caulfield.

Neither are nominated for the $1.5 million Blue Diamond next month but McEvoy didn't rule out making a late entry.

"When those nominations (for the Blue Diamond) are taken, (stablemates) Concealer, Manuel and Jackson were a different level and I just thought there's a lot of other races, and I didn't bother," McEvoy said.

"And maybe I've made a mistake.

"You can still get into those races, you've got to pay the money but if these horses are racing the way they're racing, I wouldn't rule it out. But we'll go to the Inglis Premier and then we'll decide."

Lessyd had placed at Moonee Valley and Geelong and McEvoy said it had taken time for the gelding to learn his trade.

"He was much more professional today," he said.

Favourite Bringaroo ($3) defeated Lessyd at Geelong but could only manage fifth with jockey Glen Boss reporting the colt sweated up before the race and may have come to the end of its preparation.
