Madotti gets things her own way

Saturday 26 December 2015, 6:02pm

Trainer Matt Dunn admits Madotti is the most frustrating horse he has ever trained but with things going her way the filly has come out on top in a Group Three race.

Madotti ($10) came with a powerful burst to beat Most Important ($26) by a half length in the Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Madotti had won just one of her previous 10 starts but Dunn said with any luck she would have had at least four wins and well over a million dollars in prize money.

"Yes she is the most frustrating horse I have ever trained," Dunn said.

"She has had a run of bad barriers, wet tracks and no luck in the straight in just about all of her wins."

"If she had drawn a good barrier she would have won the Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic instead of finishing fourth behind Le Chef."

He said Madotti would now press on to the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) on January 9.

"The whole idea of today's race was to see if she could run a strong 1300 metres and then 1400 in the Guineas," Dunn said.

"On her breeding you wouldn't think she wouldn't get much further than 1200 but she has always indicated she wants more ground."

Jockey Tye Angland said Madotti had been able to get a good run from barrier two and then had been able to get into the race when he wanted.

Tegan Harrison said Most Important's run was full of merit after he was trapped wide.

Glyn Schofield said Egyptian Symbol had been slow to jump and then had no luck in the straight before getting up on the fence to finish third.

Meanwhile, improving mare Tina Melina earned a wild card entry into the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) with her win in the Driefontein Hcp (1200m).

Tina Melina made it two wins from her past two starts when she charged home to beat Eloping ($12) who looked certain at the 150m to give former jockey Peter Robl his first win as a trainer.

The Magic Millions have introduced a scheme where several wild card entries are available for horses which did not pay up or were ineligible for races on their $10 million day on January 9.

Tina Melina's trainer Tony Gollan said he wasn't originally a fan of the wild card idea but he was now "all for it".

"Tina Melina is a home-bred and didn't go through a sales ring. It means she can get a wild card into the Magic Millions fillies and mares race," he said.
