Jacqui's Joy chasing more cheers for Beer

Friday 25 December 2015, 7:28am

Jacqui's Joy will line up at Caulfield on Saturday in a bid to give young trainer Mitchell Beer his first metropolitan success.

The filly has already been significant in Beer's fledgling career, providing his first winner after he was granted his trainer's licence late last month.

Unfortunately, Beer's name didn't appear in the race book for Kilmore on December 1 when Jacqui's Joy scored her maiden win.

"I had a phone call the night before Jacqui's Joy raced to say my licence had been approved," Beer said.

"We had two runners that day at Kilmore and somewhere between the first (Jacqui's Joy) and the second one she was transferred into my name.

"Officially she was my first runner. It worked out pretty well as the other one ran second last."

Beer trains in partnership with Max Hinton and Jacqui's Joy heads to Caulfield on Saturday to represent the pair in the Schweppes Handicap.

The Kilmore win was Jacqui's Joy's Australian debut following her four runs in New Zealand for Frank Ritchie.

Beer said he was having lunch at a local hotel when he saw Jacqui's Joy run second on a heavy track at Rotorua and immediately made inquiries about the daughter of Real Saga.

"I look at New Zealand a lot," Beer said.

"It's a really good market for us to purchase horses.

"We can't compete in the European market so we try to target horses that the Asian market isn't interested in, mainly fillies."

Beer said the step up in trip to 1400m on Saturday would be ideal for Jacqui's Joy, adding the three-year-old gave every indication she would run 2000 metres.

He says if her form warrants she may be set interstate targets during the upcoming autumn and winter carnivals.

"We'll keep heading out to that trip and I guess Saturday will give us a really good guide," he said.

"We'll be training her towards some of the better three-year-old fillies races, whether that's Sydney, Adelaide or Queensland, and see how far her ability gets her."
