Preferment up and running for Hong Kong

Thursday 26 November 2015, 3:38pm

It has taken only a few days in a lush paddock to turn Preferment from Melbourne Cup also-ran into one of the best chances for an Australian win in Hong Kong.

Preferment is a confirmed runner in the Hong Kong Vase in a last-minute extension of a spring campaign that in reality has been months in the making without it being a serious stable target for the Turnbull Stakes winner.

"Hong Kong was never in the plan but we inoculated about 20 horses in the winter to ensure everything was up to date should we decide on sending one of them," Waller said.

"And Preferment was never going to go until a couple of days after the Melbourne Cup."

The Melbourne Cup was hardly the test of stamina it is meant to be and while Preferment's 20th of the 24 runners wasn't the result Waller expected, it has provided an unexpected opportunity.

"That was the race he was set for and he didn't get a fair crack at them because they just went so slow," Waller said.

"He needed a miracle to win from his position.

"After five days out on a beautiful farm bucking his heels up, we then made the decision to have a serious crack at Hong Kong."

Preferment has had three track gallops, building in intensity each time and his fourth will be in front of a raceday crowd at Rosehill on Saturday.

"That will just tune him up nicely and he'll probably have one more gallop over in Hong Kong as well," Waller said.

Waller will have a team of 13 horses racing at Rosehill, including an odds-on favourite and a pregnant mare.

Telepathic is a $1.60 chance to win the $100,000 ATC Cup while Holy Delusions resumes in foal to All Too Hard in the Goldners Horse Transport Handicap.
