Fontiton works between races at Ballarat

Thursday 27 August 2015, 4:58pm

Smart filly Fontiton has taken another step towards her spring return with an exhibition gallop at Ballarat.

Fontiton worked alongside stablemate Thurlow between races on Thursday.

Trainer Robert Smerdon is looking at the Group One Moir Stakes as Fontiton's likely spring return.

He said Thursday's hitout was about giving the filly a day out at the races and a gallop on the course proper.

"It's a good adrenaline rush for them and it stimulates them a bit," Smerdon told Racing Live.

Smerdon was pleased with what he saw in the straight as the pair quickened up in the run to the line.

"I thought it was a nice bit of work in the straight and another step on the way," he said.

Fontiton has been doing her build-up at Smerdon's Ballarat stable, utilising the straight hill track there.

"We've had feet issues with her but they seem to be well and truly under control now," Smerdon said.

"The farrier has done a really good job. We've just got to keep ticking her over and it's about the balance of getting enough work into them and keeping them sound and good in their action, but so far so good."

Fontiton won her first three starts including the Blue Diamond Preview and Prelude for fillies before finishing fifth as favourite in the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes where she emerged out of the race needing surgery to remove bone chips from a fetlock.
