My Girl Hayley gets true test

Thursday 27 August 2015, 12:04pm

The race morning scratching last week of promising filly My Girl Hayley could prove a blessing in disguise when she makes her city debut at Doomben.

My Girl Hayley was scheduled to have her first Doomben start over 1100 metres last Saturday but had a slight pulse in a hoof and was withdrawn.

She will now have her metropolitan debut in the Rawgroup Hospitality Handicap (1200m) with Tim Bell in the saddle.

Trainer Tony Gollan said there had been nothing major wrong with My Girl Hayley but he decided to err on the side of caution.

"It was only a slight pulse and it didn't come up into an abscess. She has missed no work and in fact she galloped strongly on Tuesday."

"As it turned out scratching her was probably a blessing in disguise. The track was wet and the inside where she drew was no good."

"Also the winner really flew along and that wouldn't have suited her either. It is a strong race on Saturday but it should give us a guide to where we are at with her," Gollan said.

My Girl Hayley, who won her only start in great fashion at the Sunshine Coast, is entered for the Group One Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in October but she is no certainty to head south.

"She is also a Magic Millions horse and we have the option of the Magic Millions Guineas in January," Gollan said.

He also has the smart Most Important, winner of his past two starts in the field, but admits the horse has a task.

"He has top weight and the extreme outside barrier but he is racing well."

Gollan will be in Melbourne on Saturday to saddle up Temple of Boom in the Group One Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.

But he looks set to dominate at Doomben where he has accepted with 11 runners.

"We have a big team going to the races but the weather will play a role. If we miss the storms they are predicting they will just about all run," he said.

Gollan said the exception might be The Storeman as he was considering trying him at 1350m in an open handicap on Saturday week.
