Barrier against Let's Make Adeal first-up

Thursday 27 August 2015, 10:25am

Let's Make Adeal has just failed to make the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in her past two spring campaigns but the dream is still well and truly alive for the connections of the mare.

A grand-daughter of 1991 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner Let's Elope, Let's Make Adeal kicks off her third spring carnival campaign, aimed towards the Cups, in Saturday's Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield.

The outside barrier in the capacity field hasn't helped the mare's chances of a first-up win but while disappointed about the draw, Blackiston isn't writing off Let's Make Adeal starting her campaign on a winning note.

He said despite the wide draw, the mare needs to get her campaign up and going on Saturday.

"It doesn't help being drawn out there but by the last race they might be coming down the middle of the track if we get a bit of rain," Blackiston said.

"She's well, she's going super. She'll just need some luck from the bad gate.

"She has trialled up nicely and she's been working excellent. She's got a bit of residual fitness coming back from Queensland because she only had two weeks off up there after a good campaign."

Blackiston is hoping Let's Make Adeal is in for her best spring campaign yet, coming off a three-start preparation during May-June which resulted in a Group Two placing first-up in Adelaide, a Listed win in Adelaide over 2000m, and then a fourth placing in the Group Two Brisbane Cup.

"Hopefully she'll be at her best now," Blackiston said.

"She proved that she came back in good form in the autumn.

"She's bigger, stronger and hopefully she'll have a better campaign."

Let's Make Adeal was narrowly beaten in the Lexus Stakes two years ago when a win would have secured her a Melbourne Cup berth.

Her spring campaign last year included a third, beaten just over half a length, in the Herbert Power Stakes while she was fifth in the Lexus when chasing a Melbourne Cup start.

Blackiston said it was a dream of owner Dennis Marks, and his, to get Let's Make Adeal into one or both of the Cups that her grandmother won.

"So we'll run on Saturday and then head towards maybe the Naturalism Stakes because that's an automatic qualifying race (for the Caulfield Cup)," Blackiston said.

The Bart Cummings at Flemington is also an option, with the winner of that race gaining a Melbourne Cup berth.
