Carnival ambitions for unraced Alderney

Alderney kicks off her career over a sprint trip at Moonee Valley but it's in fillies' feature races over further that trainer Sam Pritchard-Gordon hopes the three-year-old can make her mark this spring.

A sister to stakes winner Ballet Suite who was fourth in last season's Group One Vinery Stud Stakes and unplaced in two Oaks, Alderney makes her debut in Saturday's Quest Moonee Valley Plate over 1200m.

Pritchard-Gordon paid $120,000 for the filly at the Karaka Premier Yearling Sale in New Zealand last year.

"I took the punt on her and syndicated her among some close friends," he said.

Marc Murphy, captain of the Carlton AFL side, has a share in the filly.

Alderney trialled at Cranbourne in April before having a break, and Pritchard-Gordon was happy with a recent jump-out where he said the filly got back and ran on.

Pritchard-Gordon anticipates the 1200m will prove too short for Alderney but said the filly was ready to go to the races and felt there would be a solid tempo to allow her to finish strongly.

The daughter of High Chaparral has shown her trainer enough talent for Pritchard-Gordon to be looking to the spring carnival and beyond with optimism and expects her to relish a step up in trip as she builds into her campaign.

"I certainly think she's got claims to be up at this time of year and I'd love to think she can be a Wakeful or Oaks-style of filly this time in," Pritchard-Gordon said.

"I think she's hopefully a high-class filly. She's a very attractive filly, she's got the right blood and she's done everything right."

Alderney is at $26 for Saturday's race with the Lee and Anthony Freeman-trained Listed winner Strykum favourite at $3.50 with Just One Moment and Sebring Sally at $3.80.
