Cobalt date set for O'Brien and Kavanagh

Wednesday 19 August 2015, 6:35am

Danny O'Brien and Mark Kavanagh will have their cobalt charges heard by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board commencing on November 30.

The pair, along with veterinarian Dr Tom Brennan, faced a directions hearing before the RAD Board on Wednesday.

The two trainers were on June 11 charged by stewards after four O'Brien horses and one Kavanagh horse returned higher than allowed levels of cobalt.

Brennan, who provided veterinary services to the two trainers, is facing charges over the alleged administration of cobalt to the five horses trained by O'Brien and Kavanagh.

The RAD Board also heard on Wednesday an appeal by O'Brien and Kavanagh over a stewards ruling to freeze their prizemoney percentage from Group and Listed races run in Victoria.

The two trainers, along with Peter Moody and the father-and-son training partnership of Lee and Shannon Hope, were last month asked to show cause why they should not be stood down pending the hearing of their cobalt charges.

The five had rulings against them when stewards ruled their prizemoney percentages be frozen from Victorian black type races until their charges are heard.

O'Brien and Kavanagh will learn of their appeal in a written judgment at a future date.

The Hopes will be the first to front the RAD Board over their cobalt charges beginning on October 15.
