Triple Crown winner works at Del Mar

Monday 17 August 2015, 2:04pm

Triple Crown champion American Pharoah has had a working gallop at Del Mar under the watchful eye of trainer Bob Baffert and owner Ahmed Zayat.

The three-year-old colt was timed in 47.60 seconds for the half mile (800m) under work rider Martin Garcia on Sunday (Monday AEST).

It was the colt's first official timed workout since he won the Haskell Invitational two weeks ago.

The Del Mar track was closed for 10 minutes for all horses bar American Pharoah and those set to run in next weekend's Pacific Classic.

"He went nice like he always does," Baffert said.

"I think this empty track allowed him to relax some. When he's got horses all around him, he gets keyed up."

About 800 people were on hand to see American Pharoah, cheering as he came down the straight.

Garcia said the colt was "just cruising" and seemed to be improving.

American Pharoah's next start has not been announced, although Zayat is considering the $1.25 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 29.

Zayat is aiming for American Pharoah to close out his racing career in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on October 31 before he heads to stud.

Global breeding giant Coolmore secured the breeding rights to American Pharoah before he won the Belmont Stakes, the third and final leg of the triple crown.
