Melbourne Cup hopes on the line at York

Monday 17 August 2015, 6:55am

The Melbourne Cup hopes of Wicklow Brave and Simenon are on the line at the Ebor meeting at York.

Wicklow Brave switches back to the flat this week in the Ebor after a disappointing run in the Galway Hurdle while Simenon heads for the Lonsdale Cup, a race in which he was beaten just a head in 2013.

Simenon, fourth in the Melbourne Cup two years ago, has finished second, fourth and fourth again in the past three Ascot Gold Cups, but failed to fire in the Goodwood Cup last time out.

"If either of them were successful, they might just be heading Down Under," owner Nick Peacock said.

"I think it's long odds against on either of them going to Melbourne at this stage, but if one of them managed to win, it could be a possibility.

"It would be great to go to Australia again if we can."
