Meagher training team keeps on winning

An equine treadmill has been a key factor to the good start to the season for the Meagher family training team.

John Meagher, who trained What A Nuisance to win the 1985 Melbourne Cup, joined forces with his sons Chris And Dan in Brisbane in late 2012 after several successful years in Sinagpore.

The Meaghers had a double at Doomben on Saturday with Shotover River and Revitalised to take them to four metropolitan winners from just eight runners.

Chaste Angel also won at the Gold Coast to give the partnership seven winners from its past 11 runners.

Shotover River cemented his place as Brisbane's best early season stayer with his win in an open handicap over 2200m while Revitalise made it two in a row in a 1640m-benchmark race.

Dan Meagher said the use of the treadmill had been the key to both horses.

"We use the treadmill with both of them and they have responded," Meagher said.

"Shotover River has won four races over a staying trip in a campaign, which isn't easy to do.

"We were thinking of retiring Revitalise at one stage but the owners were patient and we have been able to overcome some niggling injuries with him."

He said Revitalise seemed to respond to working on the treadmill without a jockey on his back.

Plans to chase a 2400m race with Shotover River in Sydney may be put on hold for now.

"We would like to take him down there but we are having trouble finding a suitable race," Meagher said.

"There is another 2200 metre race here in a fortnight and the prize money is good."
