Milestone win for Irishman Ruby Walsh

Monday 10 August 2015, 7:55am

Irishman Ruby Walsh heads home from a whirlwind trip to Australia as the only jockey to win the English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Australian Grand National Steeplechases.

Walsh was recruited to ride Bashboy in the Grand National at Ballarat on Sunday when Steve Pateman lost an appeal against suspension last Wednesday.

The champion Irish jockey steered the Ciaron Maher-trained gelding to his third win in the blue riband of jumps racing.

Walsh has also won the Nakayama Grand Jump in Japan and been the leading rider at the Cheltenham festive nine times.

"As a jumps jockey you don't get a lot of opportunities to ply your trade abroad," Walsh said.

"I'm over the moon that I was asked to come."

Walsh returns to Europe on Monday.
