Architect goes close to Doomben 1050m mark

Saturday 8 August 2015, 3:35pm

Trainer Sherrie Lawlor believes she has found the key to Architect, the giant sprinter which went within a whisker of breaking the Doomben 1050m record on Saturday.

Starting favourite at $3.70, Architect clocked 59.65secs in winning the Zouki Handicap, 0.15secs off Whittington's course record.

Lawlor said he believed the key to Architect was keeping him fresh for sprint distances.

"We sent him up to Darling Park near Toowoomba for six weeks after he failed in April," Lawlor said.

"He doesn't have a great Doomben record but I knew with the pace on today he would finish very hard."

Architect was trained by Lawlor's father David who died after along battle with cancer earlier this year.

"He was Dad's favourite horse and I am sure he would have been watching over us today," Lawlor said.

Meanwhile, expensive galloper Most Important again overcame a case of pre-race nerves to score a fighting win in the Eileen and William Duffus Memorial Handicap.

At his previous start Most Important, a $250,000 yearling, was stirred up before winning at the Sunshine Coast and it was the same story on Saturday.

Most Important ($5.50) gave trainer Tony Gollan and jockey Tegan Harrison a double when he fought back after being headed by runner-up Mistral Thief ($8) at the 200m.

Stable foreman John Fleming said Most Important had arrived from the Peter and Paul Snowden stable in great fettle but had continued to thrive in Brisbane.

"He is a quiet horse at home but when he gets to races he obviously knows it is game day," Fleming said.

"Tony thinks he will be a really nice horse after a break.

"We would like to ride him with a sit but while he is leading and winning we stick with that."
