Weary to get an early start to spring

Sunday 2 August 2015, 3:40pm

As he did in the autumn, Weary will be out to make a winning start to his campaign in the first Group race of the new season.

The six-year-old will be trainer Chris Waller sole representative in Saturday's Group Two Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Weary won the Expressway Stakes in January and, although he didn't win again during the autumn he performed well with a third behind Contributer in the Apollo Stakes and second to Pornichet in the Doomben Cup.

"He won the equivalent race to the Missile in the autumn and he had nice trial a week ago," Waller said.

"I think he will be my only runner in the race.

"He is a bit more forward than some of the others."

The winner of two races in Europe as a young horse, Weary has won two races in Australia and been placed six times with his best form on rain-affected tracks.

He is one of a large number of imported horses in the Waller stable with Kool Kompany the next to arrive.

A Group Three winner over a mile (1600m) at Newmarket in April, the Neil Werrett-owned Kool Kompany finished second in a similar race at the Goodwood festival on Thursday and went straight into quarantine to prepare to the trip to Australia.

"He is quarantine now and will come out before the shipment of horses for the spring carnival," Waller said.

"But whether his early arrival means he will be ready to race in the spring depends on a lot of things.

"Werribee won't be open so he will have to go to Eastern Creek.

"But you can't work the horses there so much will depend on his condition and how fit he is.

"We may have to wait for the autumn with him."
