Tony Gollan flags interstate stable

Sunday 2 August 2015, 1:48pm

An interstate move is getting closer to reality for premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan.

He wrote his name into the record books with his second metropolitan trainers' premiership last season with his 79 winners the highest total in the 150 years of racing in Queensland.

The late Bruce McLachlan, who held the previous record of 78, had satellite stables in Melbourne and Sydney.

Gollan said a move interstate whether permanently or with a satellite stable had been at the back of his mind for some time.

"I love Queensland and I love living in Brisbane. But I would be telling a lie if I said I hadn't spoken with some people about an interstate move," Gollan said.

"When I moved to Brisbane from Toowoomba I was determined to establish myself among the top trainers. Things have gone well and we have won two premierships."

"It is a matter of wanting to challenge yourself but also making certain it is the correct move. Timing is always the top priority.

"We have had a bit of success for interstate owners and that will hold us in good stead.

"If I do decide to go interstate I won't be charging into it."

"Any move would be over a 12-month period."

The obvious question is whether Gollan would move to Sydney or Melbourne.

"My wife Jane is from Sydney but she loves Brisbane as well. It would be a matter of weighing up where the best opportunities lie," he said.

Gollan admits he has some concerns about the future of racing in Queensland.

"I don't want to get involved in the politics. I just want to go about my own business and train horses," he said.

"All I can say is that currently in Queensland we have good prize money and that has attracted owners here. A lot of people have spent up buying yearlings and that can only be good for everyone."

"It is obvious that if prize money is cut that will see the owners leave and take their horses with them. Victoria and NSW have just had prize money increases and we must remain at least competitive."

He said the return of Eagle Farm after renovations should help boost the industry.

"I am proud that the three leading trainers were from Eagle Farm," Gollan said.

"We had to make do with a horseshoe shape training track for a while."

"The top three trainers (Gollan, Robert Heathcote and Liam Birchley), had over 250 winners overall and 186 in the city."

Veteran Temple Of Boom, who won a trial in Sydney on Friday, will again head Gollan's spring assault when he races in the Aurie's Star at Flemington on Saturday.

"I also have a lot of nicely bred two-year-olds and unraced three-year-olds so we are expecting them to perform," he said.
