Yendall finishes season with a winner

Wednesday 29 July 2015, 5:40pm

Dean Yendall has signed off for the season with a winner at Cranbourne but will fall just short in the Australian jockeys' premiership.

Yendall rode his 137th winner of the season in Victoria when he guided the Robert Smerdon-trained Hucknall to victory in a benchmark race over 3000m on Wednesday at Cranbourne.

It took Yendall's season tally Australia-wide to 144 but Blake Shinn notched a winner at Canterbury to keep his nose one in front of Yendall.

James McDonald, who was stood down after the first race at Canterbury on Wednesday because of the flu, has 143.5 wins.

Yendall does not have rides on the final two days of the season.

Shinn has three rides at Gosford on Thursday.

Yendall leads Michael Walker by six and Brad Rawiller by seven in the Victorian premiership.

Meanwhile, leading trainer Darren Weir had three runners at Cranbourne on Wednesday but wasn't able to add to his season tally of winners.

Weir has two race meetings left to try to notch a milestone of 300 wins for the season.

Weir-trained runners have been successful in 298 races this season.

He has two runners entered at the meeting at Sale in Victoria on Thursday and runners in six races at Pakenham on Friday.
