A two-state metropolitan double eluded trainer Matthew Williams a fortnight ago when Clairvaux and Reigning Meteor finished second in Victoria and NSW respectively.
The two will both try to go one better this time around with Clairvaux to run in Saturday's $150,000 VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield and Reigning Meteor to contest the Bledisloe Cup Festival Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury.
Clairvaux ran second to Falago in the Country Cup Final at Flemington while Reigning Meteor was beaten by the exciting Way We Go at Randwick on the same day and meets that horse again.
"Hopefully we can go one better tomorrow in both states, that would be good," Williams said.
"I've had a two-state double before but I think it was Naracoorte and Warrnambool, so a Canterbury and Caulfield one would go better."
The Warrnambool trainer has tried to keep some freshness in the legs of Clairvaux and his preparation has included some work on the sand dunes on Tuesday and schooling over nine hurdles on Thursday.
"A lot of our horses do a bit of schooling," Williams said.
"They don't go really hard at them, but it just does them good mentally and helps bring their fitness right on as well.
"A bit of jumping gets their adrenaline going a bit."
Clairvaux has the second outside barrier but Williams considers it is a better draw than the inside one last start when he went back to last.
"It gives him the opportunity to stay one off the fence and he likes getting to the outside and into plenty of clear galloping room when he winds up," he said.
Reigning Meteor finished 1-1/4 lengths behind the unbeaten Way We Go last start.
Williams hopes the barrier draw and weight scale gives Reigning Meteor, to be ridden by Blake Shinn, his chance to turn the tables on the $3.60 favourite who will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.
"He (Reigning Meteor) meets him a few kilos better and Way We Go has drawn the widest gate," Williams said.
"We're probably not that well drawn either but he's going to be outside, probably having a worse run than us."
