Golden Horn earns rating equal to Frankel

Wednesday 8 July 2015, 9:33am

Golden Horn has matched the three-year-old achievement of the great Frankel with a rating of 130.

The British Horseracing Authority's head of handicapping Phil Smith raised Golden Horn 4lb (2kg) after his win in the Eclipse Stakes.

Frankel achieved that rating for his 2000 Guineas win.

"Since 1996 the only other British-trained three-year-old to post a performance of 130 has been Frankel," Smith said.

"I would be disappointed if Golden Horn cannot go on and prove himself better than 130 as the season progresses as he is clearly a fast improving colt who on Saturday showed his versatility by making the running for the first time.

"If agreed by the International Handicappers this week, it will make Golden Horn the highest-rated horse in the world so far this year."

Frankel retired unbeaten at the end of his four-year-old season with world-high rating of 140 but owner Anthony Oppenheimer recently indicated that Golden Horn was unlikely to race on after his Classic year.
