Joao Moreira seals Hong Kong jockey title

Monday 29 June 2015, 6:44am

Joao Moreira has sealed the Hong Kong jockeys' championship with four meetings remaining this season.

Moreira, the winner of three Group One races in Australia during the season, took his Hong Kong tally to 139 with a four-timer at Sha Tin on Saturday.

The Brazilian is 48 wins clear of 2013/14 champion, Australian Zac Purton, with 42 races left until season's end on July 12.

The previous best was 114 set by 13-time champion Douglas Whyte.

Moreira moved to Hong Kong in October 2013 having racked up four consecutive jockeys championships in Singapore.

He will miss the next two meetings Hong Kong because of a suspension for whip use aboard second placegetter Medicean Man in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this month.

In the trainers' premiership, John Moore has increased his lead to four over fellow ex-pat Australian John Size.
