Internationals on MVRC wish list for Plate

Adelaide's Cox Plate win has fuelled the Moonee Valley Racing Club's hopes of a healthy international representation this year.

The Irish four-year-old became the first horse trained in the northern hemisphere to win the Cox Plate when successful in 2014 for Aidan O'Brien.

Earlier this month the MVRC committee invited 12 international horses for the $3 million Cox Plate with the club to subsidise all travelling expenses to Melbourne.

"I think out of the ones we've invited there's probably three legitimate chances to come through," MVRC chief executive Michael Browell said.

Browell considers French horse Gailo Chop the most likely of the invited horses which competed at Royal Ascot to make the trip while he is hoping Hong Kong duo Dan Excel and Military Attack will take up the challenge.

"The two key ones that I'm keen to get some feedback on will be Military Attack and Dan Excel," Browell said.

"We had Dan Excel in the country last year and he had some throat issues which ended up in surgery.

"He's returned to winning form in Singapore."

A number of horses invited for the Cox Plate competed at Royal Ascot.

Solow won the Queen Anne Stakes in which Hong Kong's Able Friend was unplaced while Free Eagle narrowly beat The Grey Gatsby in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

"The Grey Gatsby and Free Eagle were top class. We'd love to get Free Eagle out and we'll work hard to do that," Browell said.

"But probably the most likely out of the runners at Royal Ascot is Gailo Chop.

"He didn't settle that well in the first half of the race and probably did his chances no good at all."

Gailo Chop, raced by Australia's OTI racing, finished eighth in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes while Dan Excel and Military Attack ran the quinella in last month's Singapore Airlines International Cup.

"We'll see what else comes through in the next month and if need be we'll issue some more invitations," Browell said.
