Gloop set to confirm affinity for Valley

Friday 19 June 2015, 1:03pm

When Gloop won at the corresponding Moonee Valley meeting last year, his trainer Patrick Ryan was taking a sabbatical.

Ryan, a TAFE teacher from Warrnambool, didn't have the time to prepare Gloop as a two-year-old and sent the son of Econsul to his cousin Chris Hyland at Cranbourne.

"I was growing the family, having another child and really didn't have the time to put into a young horse," Ryan said.

"I got him broken in and started his prep off and then sent him down to Chris to trial him.

"He liked what he saw so he had him for the last prep and then I took him back this time."

A $1000 yearling purchase, Gloop will be out to add $48,000 prize money as well as a $23,000 bonus dividend to the $86,640 he has already won when he races in the Device Technologies Handicap on Saturday.

Ryan said Gloop had confirmation faults and was best suited on tracks with give in them.

"He doesn't have a lot of flex in his joints so the harder tracks don't really suit him," Ryan said.

"I try and search for those softer tracks and Moonee Valley, a slow six, it puts him into the race.

"I'm not 100 per cent convinced he's a genuine Saturday quality horse but in the middle of winter, he handles the wet, and with his rating up he has to go to Melbourne."

With Boomwaa compressing the weights, Ryan said Gloop looked attractively handicapped after the Jackie Berriman's 1.5kg claim.

Gloop is a $15 chance with Raposo the $2.60 favourite in the field already reduced to 10 following the scratchings of King's Command, Leti Sine and All Sewn Up.
