Shamal Wind in fine form for Royal Ascot

Tuesday 16 June 2015, 9:45am

Since Choisir's King's Stand win in 2003, Australian-trained sprinters have won the race three times with Shamal Wind aiming to be the next.

Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007) and Scenic Blast (2008) are the Australian other winners of the 1000m sprint on the opening day of Royal Ascot.

Trainer Robert Smerdon is pleased with the condition of the mare since her arrival in England and looking forward to Tuesday (Wednesday AEST).

"She's a very flexible mare and we wouldn't be worried if the ground was very soft or very fast," Smerdon said.

"It's going to a tough race, but our horses have done well in this race before and I think she'll go pretty well.

"It's great to be involved and great to have a horse good enough to run at Ascot.

"Her win in the Oakleigh Plate was typical of her style in that she is a run-on sprinter. She has an explosive burst, but you have to time it exactly right and she has been narrowly beaten in races.

"She is a tricky ride."

Shamal Wind will have the assistance of dual champion English rider Ryan Moore.

The mare is the third favourite with British bookmakers who have Sole Power at the top of markets to win the race for the third successive year.
