Werther dominates Queensland Derby betting

Wednesday 3 June 2015, 11:28am

A last-start win over older horses and a rails draw have bookmakers taking few chances with Werther ahead of the Queensland Derby at Doomben on Saturday.

The New Zealand three-year-old is a firm $3 favourite for the classic, which he will contest seven days after downing Moriarty in the Eagle Farm Cup.

Werther holds sway over the Darren Weir-trained Master Of Arts, a clear $4.60 second pick after drawing gate 13.

Sadler's Lake ($9), one of three Derby runners for Chris Waller, is the only other horse at single-figure odds despite drawing barrier 18 in the field of 16 plus three reserves.

Waller also has a strong hand in the J J Atkins with Press Statement, Counterattack and Feast For Eyes, the latter drawing the inside alley.

Press Statement came up with an awkward barrier in 10 while Counterattack drew five.

Waller will be chasing his 14th Group One win of the season at Doomben where he also has Boban, Delectation and third emergency Flamingo Star in the Stradbroke Handicap.
