Ryan Moore to ride Giovanni in Derby

Wednesday 3 June 2015, 9:34am

Ryan Moore will partner plunge horse Giovanni Canaletto in the Epsom Derby.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt has been the subject of strong support for the premier Classic on Saturday.

Giovanni Canaletto, who finished second in his first start this season in a Group Three race at the Curragh on May 24, is around the 8-1 mark.

Coolmore said Joseph O'Brien would ride stablemate Kilimanjaro, while Hans Holbein is the mount of Seamie Heffernan.

Moore has also been given the go-ahead to ride the O'Brien-trained Tapestry in the Coronation Cup.

Coolmore also firmed up plans for the Oaks on Friday with O'Brien on Together Forever, Heffernan on Diamondsandrubies and Colm O'Donoghue on Qualify.

Fellow Coolmore filly Legatissimo, trained by David Wachman, is also set to run in the Oaks after she claimed the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in the hands of Moore.

Connections of the Dermot Weld-trained Zawraq have warned the colt is not certain to line up in the Derby after suffering an injury scare.

Zawraq is among the leading fancies for the Epsom showpiece but after completing a satisfactory piece of work, he was found to be slightly lame on his return to the yard.

"He did a bit of work this morning with Pat Smullen up. He did it fine and walked back to the yard OK but when the head lad came back into his box, he just thought he took a lame step," Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, said.

Zawraq is prominent in the Derby betting after impressively winning his two starts to date.

Frankie Dettori partners favourite Golden Horn for John Gosden and respects the chances of not only the Ballydoyle runners, but also stablemate Jack Hobbs, who he rode to finish second in the Dante behind his Derby mount.

"He is favourite, we know what he's made of," Dettori told At The Races.

"I'm scared of Jack Hobbs, the horse has improved since the Dante and he stays well."
