Pornichet strolls home in Toowoomba Cup

Saturday 2 May 2015, 4:23pm

Pornichet has shown his class to win the Toowoomba Cup with trainer Gai Waterhouse labelling him a perfect Cox Plate horse.

But first she has another Group One mission for Pornichet in the Doomben Cup (2000m) next Saturday.

Pornichet ($2.30) had Saturday's Toowoomba Cup (2150m) in his keeping on the home turn and was not knocked about by jockey Tim Bell to win by a length to Volkhere ($8).

Hopfgarten ($8) lost no fans for the Doomben Cup with his third, a half length behind his stablemate Volkhere.

Waterhouse elected to run Pornichet in the Toowoomba Cup after he missed a start as an emergency in the Group Two Hollindale Stakes (1800m) last Saturday.

The Cup was Pornichet's first start since his unlucky fifth in the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 6.

"I had no hesitation in starting him in the Toowoomba Cup even with 60-1/2 kilograms. He was the class horse in the field and showed it," Waterhouse said.

"I just hope we have enough money for the Doomben Cup next week. I think he will be very hard to beat."

Waterhouse said in the long term Pornichet was an ideal horse for the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in the Melbourne spring.

"That's where we would like to end up," she said.

Waterhouse was treated like a movie star by the Toowoomba crowd with many requesting to be photographed with her.

Bell said Pornichet was just too classy and had the race won a long way from home.

"He was always going to win a race like that and he is up to better class," he said.

Trainer Rob Heathcote was thrilled with the run of Hopfgarten.

"It was only his third run from a spell and he went straight from 1600 to the 2150 metres. I think I will run him next week if we get a start," Heathcote said.

While Pornichet and Hopfgarten were emergencies in the Hollindale they look likely to get Doomben Cup runs with several possible contenders sent for spells.
