Manawanui banned after 2nd bleeding attack

Tuesday 3 March 2015, 11:59am

The racing career of Manawanui is finished after the Group One star suffered a bleeding attack during a Rosehill barrier trial win on Tuesday.

It is the second time the 2011 Golden Rose winner has bled during competition, earning a lifetime ban from racing in Australia.

Manawanui was preparing for a return to racing in the Group One Canterbury Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

"It's the end of the journey," trainer Ron Leemon said.

Manawanui cost $45,000 as a yearling and he put Leemon and a syndicate owners in the racing spotlight during a spring three-year-old campaign.

He won the $1 million Golden Rose from Smart Missile and fought out an epic Caulfield Guineas when runner-up to Helmet.

The six-year-old attracted several seven-figure offers during his career, including a $2 million bid from Asian interests before the 2012 Sydney autumn carnival.

But it took Manawanui three years to win another race after his Golden Rose triumph and the six-year-old's Group Three victory at Randwick in September was the last of his seven wins.

"He's been a great horse for the stable, one that is going to be hard to replace," Leemon said.

Manawanui ended his career with earnings of $1.45 million.
