Contributer dominant in Apollo Stakes win

Saturday 14 February 2015, 5:45pm

Contributer has underscored Sheikh Mohammed's Australian investment with a dominant Apollo Stakes win at Randwick.

Formerly trained by Ed Dunlop, Contributer was bought by Godolphin to join the southern hemisphere team under John O'Shea.

He had two spring starts in Melbourne, for a Group Three win and an unplaced effort in the Emirates Stakes, before his 1400-metre Group Two victory on Saturday.

Contributer will not return to Melbourne this autumn, with O'Shea confirming a Group One path to the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April.

"He has the right attitude for racing here but I wasn't sure about the ground, whether it might be too firm, or the 1400 metres," O'Shea said.

"But he has shown today what he can do. He is a very exciting horse and it's on to the Chipping Norton Stakes.

"After that maybe the Ranvet then the Queen Elzabeth. It's a very big carrot.

"I don't want to risk taking him to Melbourne in case something goes wrong and the tracks may be too hard.

"He is trained at the Osborne Park property and has really adapted well and we will keep him where he is comfortable."

Settling back in the field, Contributer ($5.50) joined in at the top of the straight and stretched out to collar Ninth Legion ($7.50) and put 1-1/2 lengths between them.

Weary ($5.50) held his position to finish another neck third with favourite Lucia Valentina ($4.40) doing her best work late for fourth just ahead of Silent Achiever ($14) who also came from back in the field.

James McDonald said Contributer had all the attributes to be a topliner here.

"He has got a turn of foot which most of the Europeans don't have," he said.

"He relaxed beautifully and put himself in the race when it mattered."

Contributer, who is also entered for the Doncaster Mile, won five races in England from 1738m to 2018m and the Apollo was his first attempt at 1400 since his debut as a two-year-old.
