Petrology, Java pose CF Orr Stakes danger

Wednesday 11 February 2015, 4:47pm

Three-year-olds Petrology and Java are considered the biggest threats to Peter Moody winning the CF Orr Stakes for the fifth time.

Moody will run three-time Group One winner Dissident in Saturday's weight-for-age race at Caulfield.

And the the four-year-old has opened a clear-cut favourite to join Typhoon Tracy (2010-11), Black Caviar (2012) and Moment Of Change (2014) as Moody-trained horses to win the Group One race.

Dissident, beaten into third when resuming in the Australia Stakes, was the $2.90 favourite in an early market on Wednesday ahead of Petrology ($5.50) and the race-fit Java ($7).

Sandown Guineas winner Petrology resumed with a closing second to Java in the Manfred Stakes and is set to be given his first chance in a Group One race.

Trainer David Hayes and Tom Dabernig also have import Spillway who will be out to go one better than his result when resuming in the spring.

He was beaten in a photo finish in the PB Lawrence Stakes over the Caulfield 1400m and Hayes has said he's mirrored that preparation leading into this.

Star Rolling won the PB Lawrence and he also resumes in the weight-for-age CF Orr which has attracted a field of 15.

Star Rolling failed to figure in the placings for the rest of his spring campaign.

Co-trainer Craig Widdison said the gelding pulled a muscle in his hindquarter when well-beaten in the Mackinnon Stakes in November but seemed to have returned in good order.

"We're hoping that doesn't pose a problem again," he said.

"We think he might be a bit of a fresh horse. At this stage we've got it in our minds we might space his runs and keep him a bit fresher."

Connections opted to kick-off Star Rolling in the Orr instead of the Carlyon Stakes (1600m) on Saturday.

"There doesn't seem to be as much pace in the CF Orr so we thought we might as well have a go," Widdison said.

"There's a few stayers resuming so he might be able to get away with running a place in a Group One."
