Gear changes to help Magnus Slipper

Tuesday 10 February 2015, 1:42pm

Consistent but quirky mare Magnus Slipper will have another gear change for her first start on her home track at Mornington.

Trainer Carlo Vidotto has removed the crossover nose band and added ear muffs to Magnus Slipper for Wednesday's benchmark 64 handicap over 1500m.

Magnus Slipper resumed at Cranbourne on January 23 with a solid finishing third behind Lady Einstein over 1300m.

Vidotto said the mare did plenty wrong and would appreciate the extra distance.

"She's a bit ratty in the head and I put a tongue tie, a crossover nose band, the works, and I don't think she knew where she was first-up," Vidotto said.

"In the straight when she realised what she was doing she flew home and in another few strides she wins it.

"She's come on from the run and we've taken the crossover nose band off and put ear muffs on again and the extra distance is certainly going to be a help for her."

Magnus Slipper has been a consistent performer in her limited career with the four-year-old recording a win and four minor placings from her six starts.

After she won a maiden at Cranbourne at her second start in March 2014, Vidotto took Magnus Slipper to Sandown in May where she produced her only bad performance, finishing at the tail of the field over 1600m.

"She was nearly at the end of her prep there at Sandown and we ran her just sort of hoping," Vidotto said.

"She got her tongue over the bit and it was her first time at Sandown and everything went wrong.

"In the end Alan Creighton didn't knock her around."

Creighton has been aboard the mare in her six starts and again takes the ride on Wednesday.
