Taillevent to be gelded despite win

Wednesday 14 January 2015, 4:57pm

Improving two-year-old Taillevent's easy win at Ipswich is unlikely to save him from the surgeon's knife.

Trainer Bruce Hill has a big opinion of Taillevent but says the plan is still to geld him.

The colt finished second last, beaten 12 lengths, at his previous start at Doomben in December.

However on Wednesday, Taillevent ($5) redeemed Hill's faith when he strolled home to a 3-1/2 length win over Dutch Treat ($11) in the Sirromet Wines Maiden (1100m).

"Taillevent wanted to over-race at his Doomben start and folded at the finish. But he got it right today," Hill said.

"I will probably send him to the paddock and make a gelding out of him. I think we will have a really nice horse then."

Winning rider Matt McGuren said Taillevent had always shown ability and had improved with racing.

"I think that (gelding) would be a good idea," he said.

"I have to put up with him most days."

Meanwhile, a pre-race plan panned out perfectly when Twin Fighter ($2.70) led all the way to win the Star Winery Plate (1100m).

At his previous start Twin Fighter was a short priced favourite on the strength of a brilliant trial win but got a long way back in the field before finishing fourth.

"We decided from the bad barrier today to go to the front and it worked out with him running smart time," trainer Liam Birchley said.
